Fresh off the presses from the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) we learn that what employers want hasn’t really changed. According to the Job Outlook 2011, NACE the skills employer say they “prize” are:

  • Communication Skills (Verbal)
  • Strong Work Ethic
  • Teamwork Skills
  • Analytical Skills
  • Initiative

So in other words you need to be able to:

  • Be articulate in person and on the phone, not just over email
  • You should be to work on time, stay late and be asking what else can I do
  • As an employee you should work well with others and collaborate…Oh and support others on your staff at work and possibly even outside of work
  • Be good with numbers and figures in order to interpret or predict outcomes and trends
  • Be a self-starter and a leader by contributing in meetings and be the one in the office that is fueled by an idea or will lead a task that maybe no one else wants to complete

These wants are not extraordinary. Personally, they are skills and attributes I look for in co-workers and myself as well. And if you can’t check through this list and confidently say you are all of those things… work each day to be better. And ask for feedback from a trusted friend or mentor to help you get to where you want to be. Seize the Day!
