Are you looking for a job? Not sure what to do after your graduate? Why not do something “odd”. Weird advice from a Career Services Professional… right? Please read on.
My blog today is inspired by a visit I took with my colleague, Laura this week. We visited a friend and a member of our network here in Evanston, IL who has recently gone in with his friend on an entrepreneurial venture… a Distillery! Our friend left a office job to pursue what some might say is “odd” (making whiskey and gin to sell to the public). It was so refreshing to see him talking about their business and all the development that has taken place in a quick 6 month-time frame. You could truly see how happy and fulfilled he is in his new job.
After we left, I started thinking about how very few people graduate from college and think about working in a non-traditional setting, working odd hours and maybe even making history. But maybe more people really should. I then remembered from my very first Career Services job a book we had in the Library called Odd Jobs: Portraits of Unusual Occupations by Nancy Rica Schiff. Some of the oddness displayed in this wonderful little read are:
- Barbie Dress Designer
- Earthworm Farmer
- Deodorant Tester
- Video Game Tester
- Page Turner (as in helping musicians on stage)
- LEGO Model Maker
- and more!
So if you are struggling with what to do after you graduate do your research of what is out there. You might be surprised with what you find!
